Located at Cable Wharf at the bottom of George Street, the Spool Yard at Queen’s Marque tells the story of the Western Union Telegraph Company and the transatlantic cable. In 1913, the Western Union Telegraph Company occupied Cable Wharf and stored its thick, metallic subsea cables which allowed people around the world to communicate more quickly than ever before. This is one of the many stories at Queen’s Marque which is seamlessly integrated with the site, the architecture and landscape architecture.
