The Queen’s Marque district in Halifax is an iconic and mixed-use development with unprecedented downtown waterfront access. Queen’s Marque features offices, retail, food and beverage, a bespoke hotel, and luxury residences. It has become the quintessential public gathering place in the city.
Queen’s Marque invites visitors and locals to gain a deep connection to Nova Scotia and with each other, as they live, work, and play in a district shaped by stories and traditions of our past.
Materials pay tribute to Nova Scotia’s history: sandstone corresponds to the adjacent institutional precinct, while Muntz metal and timber reference shipbuilding and waterfront wharves. Once used to sheath hulls, Muntz metal was used to ensure ships could better endure harsh seawater conditions.
Sperry Design worked in close coordination with The Armour Group Limited, the developer, to plan and design a vast series of large scale exterior and interior Muntz metal panels that clad the buildings public spaces. The panels are adorned with maritime marks, glyphs and stories that speak to our rich and prosperous seafaring past.
The design is holistically integrated with both the architecture (MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects) and landscape architecture (Brackish Design Studio).
